Coventry citizens getting help to sort debt issues – Coventry CA Press Release

Coventry Citizens Advice have welcomed donations of computers by SortIT, a Warwick based IT Company, to help them advise people in debt who are being “trapped” by the escalating cost of living crisis.

The laptop and desktop computers will be used by staff to offer advice on benefits.

Coventry Citizens Advice Client Services Director, James Lawrence, said:

This is a fantastically generous donation from an organisation which has consistently supported Coventry Citizens Advice.

We have faced a significant upturn since the start of the new year in people coming to us with complex debt issues.

This donation will directly aid staff working with some of the most vulnerable Coventry people as they choose between eating or heating their homes and trying to pay their rent.

This donation will have a hugely positive impact on the mental health and wellbeing of these clients”.

Nick Marsden, from SortIT, added:

Our recycling scheme has been in place for a few years now, providing local schools and charities with much needed IT equipment, such as laptops,  monitors and printers.

We’re incredibly grateful to all our customers who have contributed to the scheme by donating their old equipment to us. Of course, all data is safely removed by our engineers before sending the equipment on to its new owners.

It’s fantastic to hear what a difference this simple act will make to Citizens Advice and the local community, and we’re delighted to be involved.

As a business, we are committed to improving our Corporate Social Responsibility efforts so, as well as the positive impact this scheme has on the community, we’re also pleased to be able to do our bit for the environment.”

Increase in debt work

Coventry Citizens Advice have had more than 425 requests for Debt Advice through January and February 2023.  This includes council tax arrears, fuel debt and rent arrears.  Many people are struggling with having to choose between food and fuel.  Half of all our complex debt clients have no money to pay down their debts after covering essentials.

James Lawrence further commented:

“Coventry residents feeling worried about their finances can always turn to the Citizens Advice network for help. Our advice is free, impartial, independent and confidential and can deliver real results. We never charge people for advice and we don’t judge – we just help.”
